Most professional traders will tell you that when trading, you should have a MINIMUM of 1.5 x profit target vs. your risk. In other words, if you are risking 20 pips on a trade, you should have a profit target of at least 30 pips. (30/20= 1.5).
Having a larger profit target than a stop also allows a person to have a lower winning % on their trades, yet be very profitable. In fact, many professional traders only win 50% of their trades. However, if they let their profits run and cut their losses, they can profit tremendously. Consider the following example: A person has 20 trades in a month and risks 20 pips to profit 30 pips. They only win 50% of their trades which means they have 10 winning trades. Their profit is 30 pips (30 pips x 10 trades= 300 pip profit). They would have 10 losing trades x 20 pips which is 200 pips in losses.
